Unlimited assets

Intune supports assigning VPP apps with unlimited licenses from Apple Business Manager and Apple School Manager on iOS/iPadOS and macOS devices. For these apps, you don't need to acquire additional license quantities as your deployment grows.

Apple refers to apps and books that an organization owns as assets. Free apps and books support unlimited assignment by default. However, organizations can choose to retain their existing fixed inventory for an organizational unit. Don't assume that every free app has unlimited licenses for every location. Paid apps still require sufficient purchased licenses for your assignments.

To deploy an app with unlimited licenses:

In Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, acquire the free app for the location associated with your Intune location token.
In the Intune admin center, select Tenant administration > Connectors and tokens > Apple VPP tokens, select the token, and choose Sync. For more information, see Synchronize a VPP token.
Assign the synchronized app to your groups as described in Assign a volume-purchased app.

Unlimited licenses remove the need to manage a fixed license quantity. They don't change the device and user licensing requirements or assignment restrictions described in this article.

Apple's Get Assets API can represent an unlimited asset with a totalCount of 2147483647 when the request doesn't specify the unlimited parameter.
